How to Launch a Private-Label Supplement Brand in India

By Pradeep Patil & Dr. Roshan Kulkarni (Improva Herbal Products)••8 min read

India’s dietary supplement and functional nutrition market is expanding at over 16% CAGR, driven by preventative healthcare, fitness adoption, and D2C e-commerce channels. For aspiring health brand founders, navigating the transition from a product idea to commercial retail shelves requires strategic decisions around formulation, licensing, and manufacturer selection.

At Improva, we manufacture for leading D2C fitness and wellness brands out of our WHO-GMP certified manufacturing facility in Pune. Here is the operational checklist every brand must follow.

1. Step 1: Selecting the Right Dosage Format & Unit Economics

Before approaching a contract manufacturer, determine the optimal format for your target customer:

  • Powders & Blends: Ideal for sports nutrition (whey, plant protein, creatine, BCAAs). High volume per jar, requires airtight foil induction sealing. Inspect our protein powder manufacturing capabilities (6,000 kg/day).
  • Effervescent Tablets: Rapidly growing among urban consumers for Vitamin C, electrolytes, and immunity. Requires dehumidified packaging (<20% RH) in desiccant tubes.
  • Vegetarian (HPMC) Capsules: Preferred for standardized herbal extracts (Ashwagandha, Curcumin, Shilajit) and daily multivitamins.
  • Pectin Functional Gummies: High customer retention for beauty (Biotin) and sleep (Melatonin), appealing to pill-fatigued consumers.

2. Step 2: Understanding Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs)

One of the largest hurdles for early-stage brands is managing cash flow against minimum production runs. In the Pune manufacturing belt, standard MOQs typically look like:

  • 🥣 Powders: 300 kg to 500 kg per flavor batch (~300 to 500 jars of 1kg)
  • 💊 Effervescent Tubes: 3,000 to 5,000 tubes (60,000 to 100,000 tablets)
  • 💊 Capsules: 30,000 to 50,000 capsules (approx. 500 to 800 bottles of 60ct)
  • 🧪 Herbal Juices: 2,000 bottles (500ml or 1000ml)

3. Step 3: FSSAI Central License & Statutory Approvals

Dietary supplements in India fall under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations (Food Safety and Standards Regulations for Nutraceuticals, Health Supplements, and Dietary Foods).

Your brand will require a Central FSSAI License as a "Marketer / Relabeller", linked to the manufacturer's central license. Working with a WHO-GMP certified partner like Improva ensures you receive valid Certificate of Analysis (CoA) batches, stability validation data, and approved ingredient dosage thresholds.

4. Step 4: Quality Testing & Batch Release Checklist

Never release a supplement batch without third-party accredited laboratory verification for:

  1. Assay Verification: Quantitative HPLC testing confirming the labeled potency of active vitamins, proteins, or herbal extracts.
  2. Heavy Metals Screening: AAS confirmation that Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, and Mercury fall below strict safety thresholds.
  3. Microbiological Safety: Absence of E. coli, Salmonella, and yeast/mold colonies.
